The Neighbor Fund

This summer we gave one family a whole new system. Then the phone kept ringing. The Neighbor Fund is how we keep saying yes.

What happened this summer

We didn’t see this coming

We’re Elevate Heating & Cooling. Wichita’s own, family run, and we don’t do anything halfway.

This summer we ran a giveaway for a full AC and furnace system. Anyone could enter by sending us their story. We read every single one and scored them the same way: how much the family actually needed it, how honest the story was, and how tied in they were to this community. Chris Jackson of Jackstacks.Eats helped us get the word out a lot further than we could have on our own.

The system went to Hannah and Murl Brown out in Haysville. Three girls, five years on window units. Wichita WinSupply donated the matching furnace so the whole system could go in at once.

Then the calls started. People we’d never met, telling us their own version of the same story. A system that’s been dead for months. No money to fix it. Kids sleeping in a hot house.

We can’t give everybody a free system. We can’t fix everybody’s system for free either. But we’re not going to act like those calls didn’t happen. So we built the Neighbor Fund.

Why we’re doing this

Comfortable at home should be the standard

Everyone deserves a house that cools down in July and warms up in January. That’s the whole reason we started this company.

When KWCH12 came out to cover the Browns, we told them it was the highlight of our career. Not because of the cameras. Because of what Hannah said after: “My girls can sleep comfortably at night now.”

The Neighbor Fund is how we make that happen for the next family, and the one after that. Not another one-time giveaway. Something that runs all year.

Three moving parts

How the fund works

No middleman. No overhead. Sponsor money and salvaged parts going onto real invoices for real families.

01

Sponsors cover the labor and equipment

A local business or a neighbor pays for a repair or a full install for a family they’ve never met. That money goes onto the family’s invoice, same as any other customer’s payment. Our techs get paid for the work like any other job.

02

Families apply the same way the Browns did

Send us your story. An email, a note, a photo, a video, whatever’s easiest. A real person reads it and you get an answer. Then a tech comes out for a diagnostic, so what happens next is based on what’s actually wrong with your system, not on who tells the best story.

03

Salvaged parts bring the cost down

When we pull a good contactor or condenser fan motor off a system we’re replacing, we keep it. If it matches what you need and it’s legal to reuse under EPA refrigerant rules, the part itself costs nothing. A sponsor still covers the labor to put it in, which is what makes that free part actually turn into cold air.

Good parts don’t get scrapped

Free parts for the people who need them

Every replacement job leaves parts behind that still have life in them. If a part is spec-matched and legal to reuse, it goes to a neighbor instead of the scrap pile, at no cost for the part. The labor to install it is still real work, so that piece gets sponsored like any other job. A salvaged part doesn’t make a repair free. It makes it a lot cheaper to sponsor.

The line

Not a popularity contest

The giveaway was one winner. This is a line, and a line only works if it’s fair. So here’s how we run it.

You hear back

Every application gets read by a person and gets a real answer. Within 30 days of applying you’ve either had a tech at your house or you know exactly where you stand. Nobody gets left in limbo.

Worst off goes first

No heat or no cooling in dangerous weather, with kids, elderly, or medical needs in the home, moves to the front. Then systems that are fully down. Then systems that are limping. Inside each group, it’s first come, first served.

Diagnostic before anything

A tech comes out and puts real eyes on the system. That visit decides what you need and what it costs. Your story gets you in the line. The diagnostic decides the work.

Diagnosed jobs get funded first

Once we know what a repair costs, that job goes to sponsors before we start new ones. If you’ve been waiting 30 days without a diagnostic, you move up. Likes and shares don’t move anyone anywhere.

"It's nice to see that there's still good out there. People willing to go above and beyond."
